Tradescantia Zebrina

Tradescantia zebrina

The wandering jew: ultra-fast growth, purple-and-silver leaves, instant propagation. Ideal for hanging baskets, beginner-perfect.

Beginner-friendly Flowering
Tradescantia zebrina with purple and silver striped leaves

The Tradescantia zebrina — the wandering jew — is one of the fastest-growing indoor plants on the market. Within months, a 10 cm cutting becomes a cascade of trailing stems with spectacular purple and silver leaves. Ideal in a hanging basket, on a high shelf, or as a companion in a large pot.

What you really need to know

Impressive growth but needs regular cutting back: without pruning, stems get extremely long and the base goes bare. Pinch tips every 6 weeks to keep the plant dense. Each cut = an instant propagation.

Light

Bright indirect light. In low light, colours dull and the plant becomes uniformly green — losing all aesthetic interest. A few hours of soft direct sun intensify the purples.

Watering

Every 5 to 7 days. Likes a slightly moist substrate (never soaked). Communicates clearly when thirsty: slightly limp leaves. One watering and 2 hours later, revived.

Humidity and temperature

Tolerates standard apartment conditions (40-70 %, 13-27 °C). Misting beneficial in winter.

Pruning to bushen up

Every 6-8 weeks: pinch tips 2-3 cm below the point. Each cut:

  1. Stimulates new lateral growth (bushiness)
  2. Yields an instant cutting to put in water

Mistakes to avoid

  • Insufficient light: dull colours, ugly plant
  • No pruning: bare base, dangling naked stems
  • Overwatering: stem rot (the Tradescantia is sensitive)

Toxicity

⚠️ Mildly toxic to cats and dogs (irritating sap). Symptoms: skin irritation on contact, vomiting if ingested.

Propagation

Laughably easy: cut 5-10 cm of stem, drop in water or directly in soil, roots in 5-10 days. One mother plant easily yields 20 cuttings a year.

  • Zebrina classic: purple and silver
  • Quadricolor: 4 colours (green, pink, white, purple)
  • Tricolor: white, green, pink variegation
  • Burgundy: uniform deep purple
