ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas)

Zamioculcas zamiifolia

The drought champion: survives 1-2 months without water and tolerates low light. The perfect plant for travelers and offices.

Beginner-friendly Air purifying
Zamioculcas zamiifolia (ZZ Plant) with waxy dark green stems

The Zamioculcas zamiifolia — nicknamed ZZ Plant — is the most drought-resistant plant on the market. Its rhizomes look like water-engorged bulbs and let it survive months without watering. It’s the ideal plant for poorly lit offices, frequent travelers, or spaces you forget to visit.

What you really need to know

Tolerates low light, neglect, dry heated air. The only real danger: overwatering. When in doubt, wait another week. Slow growth but spectacular new stems (bright green when they unfurl).

Light

Very tolerant. Grows in low light (north-facing offices), thrives in medium indirect. Avoid direct sun which yellows the leaves. The “Black Raven” cultivar (almost black) needs more light to maintain its dark colour.

Watering

Every 21 to 30 days, sometimes more in winter. Substrate must dry completely between waterings. Check by lifting the pot: light = water, heavy = wait. Yellow soft leaf + wet soil = overwatering, repot immediately.

Humidity and temperature

No humidity requirement. Tolerates 12 to 30 °C. Ideal between 15-26 °C. Survives in air-conditioned offices or under-heated workspaces.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Watering too often: rhizome rot, plant lost
  • Cache pot without drainage: fatal stagnant water
  • Direct sun: leaves yellow then burn

Toxicity

⚠️ Toxic to cats, dogs and children: irritating sap, ingestion causes oral pain and vomiting. The sap can also irritate skin during repotting — wear gloves.

Propagation

Slow but doable. Two methods: rhizome division at repotting (separate the bulbs keeping roots on each), or leaf cutting in water (roots in 2-4 months, patience required).

  • Classic Zamioculcas: bright glossy green
  • Black Raven: nearly black foliage, dramatic
  • Zenzi: compact version, perfect for small spaces
