Beginner-friendly Air purifying Flowering
Peace lily with glossy green leaves and white flowers

The Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) has a unique superpower: it tells you when it’s thirsty by dramatically dropping all its leaves. One watering and 30 minutes later, it stands back up as if by magic. This explicit communication makes it the perfect plant for those who second-guess their watering schedule.

What you really need to know

Easy, communicative, naturally flowers several times a year with its iconic white spathes. Tolerates shade well — one of the rare flowering plants that survives without full sun.

Light

Medium to bright indirect. Tolerates shade well (but flowers less). Avoid direct sun which yellows the leaves. Ideal in north- or east-facing rooms.

Watering

Every 5 to 7 days. The advantage: if you forget, it dramatically droops and tells you. Water generously, drain the saucer. Avoid cold water straight from the tap.

Humidity and temperature

Enjoys 50-70 % humidity. Misting 1-2 times a week beneficial. Temperature 18-24 °C, never below 15 °C.

Flowering

The Peace Lily naturally produces its white spathes (often mistaken for flowers — they’re actually bracts) several times a year. To encourage flowering: bright indirect light, biweekly liquid fertiliser April-September, a 2-week induced dryness to trigger reblooming.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Direct sun: scorched, yellowed leaves
  • Cold tap water: thermal shock
  • No fertiliser: little to no flowering
  • Cache pot without drainage: yellow leaves

Toxicity

⚠️ Mildly toxic: irritating sap (calcium oxalate). Symptoms in pets if ingested: drooling, oral irritation.

Propagation

By rhizome division at repotting (spring). Separate clumps with roots on each section, replant immediately. The Peace Lily doesn’t propagate from cuttings.
